Dr. Nicola DeLorio is a board-certified otolaryngologist (ENT) and facial plastic surgeon with over two decades of experience. From her practice in Linwood, she helps allergy sufferers who are seeking relief from their symptoms.
“I wanted to be a doctor since I had my tonsils out when I was 6 years old and really never wavered from that,” DeLorio told the Atlantic County Times. “I had a moment when I went to college, thinking maybe I should be a nurse. But then decided no, absolutely medicine. And when I was in my residency, I did an ENT rotation and I just found the surgery, and all the details, anatomy and the variety of things that are involved in ENT so fascinating, and I was hooked.”
According to Accent Head & Neck Group, DeLorio, a life-long New Jersey local, has over 25 years of experience and lives in Linwood with her family, which includes her husband and two sons.
“I’ve been in practice for 25 years,” DeLorio said. “I’m in the southern New Jersey area. I did my residency in North Jersey, came down here and joined another practice, and about 10 years after that, started on my own. And I have expanded my practice to both an ear, nose and throat office and medical spa.
“I went to undergraduate school in a very small Catholic University, Niagara University. And then headed to New Jersey for medical school and went to University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. I spent two years in North Jersey in Piscataway, and then my clinical rotations were in southern New Jersey. Then I headed back north again and did one year of general surgery residency and then four years of ENT and facial plastics up in North Jersey at a group of hospitals, St. Barnabas Medical Center group.”
When not practicing medicine, DeLorio enjoys traveling, golfing, and has just taken up fly-fishing, along with piano lessons.
“I’d really like to get out of the country also but that still seems a little restricted, but hopefully we’re getting there soon,” DeLorio said.
The Accent Head & Neck Group focuses on the practice of balloon sinuplasty and eustachian tube dilation, along with testing and offering solutions for allergies.
When asked why she finds ENT satisfying, Dr. DeLorio said, “Well, for a long time, it never really changed. I felt like everything we did in practice, we’ve been doing for forever. But over the last seven years or so, sinus treatments have really taken off in a way that is exciting because it’s easier for the patients. There’s less recovery, better results with less downtime and struggle. So it’s just really a lot of fun to see some really innovative treatments being offered for the patients.”
The American Journal of Rhinology & Allergy reported that balloon sinuplasty is significantly safer than previous traditional sinus surgery, with patients who undergo the procedure returning to normal activities in an average of 1.4 days.
