If your family is from Atlantic County you definitely need to spend 30 minutes with this map

Atlantic County Historical Society issued the following announcement.

If your family is from Atlantic County, you definitely need to spend 30 minutes with this map.

Its the 1872 Beers Map and it lists everyone who was a home owner and those who had businesses.

It does not list owners of unimproved lots.

It's FREE to peruse on the Library of Congress website at https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3813a.la000437/?r=0.593,0.602,0.091,0.055,0.

Try it!  It's also a restored wall map in the Mays Landing Public Library lobby and at the Galloway Township Historical Society (open Saturdays).

We have an original at ACHS but it needs complete restoration. Use the FREE Library of Congress version on your computer and try to find your family members in 1872. Risleyville is Northfield today and M Reeves lived on Tilton Road, half way between Shore Road and Fire Road.

His full name was Mark Reeves (1824-1890) and he was my 3rd great-grandfather.  He was married to Katherine Parsells (1828-1901), had 9 children, was a ship and house carpenter, and our family folklore says he was killed by lightning sitting on his front porch (unproven).

One year in the 1860s he made 740 and paid an income tax of $36 at a 5% rate (IRS record).

He registered for the Civil War draft at age 41 but never served.  We do not have a photo of him yet.  Let me know what you find.
