Congressman Van Drew has criticized Exelon for its proposal to increase utility rates by 8% in South Jersey. The increase is intended to fund infrastructure upgrades, including electric vehicle charging stations. Exelon is seeking approval from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) for this rate hike.
"Let me be clear—Exelon has already taken far too much from the hardworking families and small businesses of South Jersey," stated Congressman Van Drew. He further added, "Now, they are trying to force our residents to bankroll their radical agenda, including electric car charging stations, while they continue to rake in massive profits. This is a company valued in the tens of billions of dollars. If they want to upgrade their infrastructure, they can do it on their own dime—not by gouging South Jersey residents even further."
Van Drew urged residents to voice their opposition and emphasized the importance of public input in the NJBPU's decision-making process. "A lot of you have been asking how you can help in this fight and now is the time to act," he said. "While I will continue to do all I can at the federal level, this is a state-level issue that will ultimately be decided by the NJBPU. Their decision hinges on public input, and your voice matters."
The congressman also mentioned plans to brief the incoming administration about this issue and push for a federal investigation into Exelon's practices. He stressed the need for immediate action against what he described as exploitation by Exelon.
Residents are encouraged to contact local officials and file complaints with NJBPU through provided channels.
