Congressman Van Drew announced the passage of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), which includes the New Jersey Shore Hot Spot Erosion Mitigation Study. This initiative aims to protect South Jersey's coastlines by authorizing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to develop and implement projects to address shoreline erosion. These projects will involve constructing seawalls, creating living shorelines, and undertaking beach renourishment efforts.
Van Drew expressed satisfaction with the bipartisan collaboration with Representative Frank Pallone in securing key provisions for New Jersey. "The Hot Spot Erosion Mitigation Study is a promise to safeguard our coastal way of life and the natural beauty that defines our beloved South Jersey," said Congressman Van Drew (NJ-02). He emphasized the need for innovative approaches to protect the coastline from erosion and committed to ensuring effective implementation of this new program.
Pallone highlighted the broader implications of erosion beyond sand loss, stating, "Hot spot erosion isn't just about losing sand—it's about losing the first line of defense for New Jersey families and businesses against storms and flooding." He noted that the Jersey Shore contributes over $50 billion annually in economic activity and supports numerous jobs. The study aims to identify problem areas and develop solutions to protect both the coastline and local economies.
