Congressman Van Drew recently facilitated a listening session in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner. The event aimed to address concerns raised by public housing residents and community leaders regarding the conditions managed by the Atlantic City Housing Authority (ACHA).
Congressman Van Drew expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs: “What has been going on with the Atlantic City Housing Authority (ACHA) is completely unacceptable,” he stated. He emphasized that families have been living in unsafe and poorly managed environments without accountability. This prompted him to invite Secretary Turner to witness firsthand the issues affecting residents.
This visit marked a significant moment as it was the first time a U.S. Secretary had met directly with public housing residents in Atlantic City, highlighting HUD’s commitment to addressing these concerns. Congressman Van Drew affirmed that this engagement signifies serious attention from HUD towards resolving these issues.
In addition to discussions in Atlantic City, meetings were held with officials from Bridgeton and Weymouth Township. These discussions covered broader housing challenges such as homelessness and ensuring seniors are not relegated to substandard housing. Congressman Van Drew reiterated his commitment: “This is just the beginning. I will not stop fighting until we see real results and real change for the people of Atlantic City and every community across South Jersey.”
HUD Secretary Scott Turner acknowledged Congressman Van Drew’s efforts: “Thank you to Congressman Van Drew for hosting today’s listening sessions in Atlantic City.” He appreciated hearing directly from those affected, stating that their input is vital for creating effective solutions. Secretary Turner stressed HUD’s dedication to revitalizing neglected communities and improving access to quality housing.
