The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office commemorates National Human Trafficking Awareness Day today, January 11th. The FBI lists human trafficking as the third largest criminal activity in the world.
Human trafficking is defined as the exploitation of a person for labor, services, or commercial sex. Victims are generally recruited, harbored, transported, or patronized through means of manipulation, coercion, physical force, or threat of bodily harm. In 2021, New Jersey had 466 human trafficking victims with the majority being victims of sex trafficking, and a smaller percentage from labor trafficking.
