Washington, DC - Congressman Van Drew has put forth the Child Tax Credit Integrity Act in an effort to fortify the integrity of the federal tax system. The proposed legislation aims to compel individuals seeking the Child Tax Credit to furnish their Social Security Number (SSN) as proof of lawful residence in the U.S., thereby enhancing eligibility verification and curbing potential exploitation of the system.
Highlighting the necessity of the bill, Congressman Van Drew pointed out, "Right now, there is an oversight in our tax system that is being taken advantage of by those who entered our country illegally." He further criticized the Biden administration's open border policies, asserting, "The Biden administration's open border policies have already wasted hundreds of millions of our tax dollars. This common-sense change will end one of the worst abuses of our system and ensure Americans hard-earned tax dollars are not being used to benefit illegal immigrants."
Under current regulations, applicants for the child tax credit can submit either an SSN or an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) to apply, enabling undocumented immigrants to seek the credit. The proposed Child Tax Credit Integrity Act seeks to amend existing laws by necessitating applicants to file with a work-authorized SSN, thereby restricting the tax credit to only lawful citizens.
According to the Joint Committee on Taxation, the implementation of this legislation is estimated to save taxpayers just under $3 billion annually.
Notable co-sponsors of the bill alongside Congressman Van Drew include Congresswoman Harriet Hageman (R-WY), Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-IL), Congressman Troy Nehls (R-TX), Congressman Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Congressman Paul Gosar (R-AZ), and Congressman Barry Moore (R-AL).
