Today, Congressman Van Drew expressed his intention to collaborate with a sponsor to reintroduce legislation aimed at withdrawing federal funding from colleges and universities that permit anti-semitic events on their campuses. This announcement follows protests at Columbia University organized by a group named Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD). CUAD released a statement concerning Veterans Day, saying, "We reject this holiday and refuse to celebrate it. The American war machine should not be honored for the horrors unleashed on others. Instead, we will celebrate Martyrs Day in honor of those martyred by the Israel-US war machine."
Congressman Van Drew criticized Columbia University following these events. He stated, "Just when you think Columbia University has hit rock bottom, they somehow manage to surpass their previous lows and embarrass themselves even further." He emphasized that taxpayer money should not support activities that dishonor veterans by celebrating individuals who aim to harm America. "You would think those attending a prestigious university in the shadow of the World Trade Center would know better, but apparently not," he added. Van Drew is eager to work with colleagues on passing this legislation when the new Congress convenes in January.
