Shore Medical Center is highlighting Dr. John Wilson, the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Shore Cancer Center, as part of National Doctors’ Day celebrations this March. With nearly two decades in radiation oncology, Dr. Wilson is recognized for his dedication to patient care and excellence in his field.

Dr. Wilson’s path to medicine was inspired by his mother, a nurse who introduced him to healthcare. "My mother was probably my first inspiration to become a physician," he says. His interest grew through high school volunteer work and an AP biology course that connected science with practical healthcare applications.

Dr. Wilson pursued undergraduate studies at Harvard University and completed medical school and residency in radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania. He remains employed with the university since completing his training in 2006. In 2021, he joined Shore Cancer Center and became its Medical Director of Radiation Oncology. He has been recognized multiple times as a “Top Doc” by SJ Magazine, most recently in 2022.

His specialty choice was influenced by personal experiences: "Near the end of high school, my grandmother developed lung cancer." During college summers, he worked in a cancer research lab, leading him to radiation oncology—a field combining his interests in cancer and radiology while allowing direct patient interaction.

Dr. Wilson finds fulfillment when patients thrive post-treatment: "By far the most rewarding thing about my work is when I see follow-ups returning several years after their treatment."

He emphasizes patient education: "I try to educate my patients as much as I can about their diagnosis and treatment options." He also wishes people understood the personalized nature of radiation treatments and how they require detailed planning.

At Shore Medical Center, Dr. Wilson appreciates the collegial atmosphere focused on patient welfare: "I think I appreciate the collegial atmosphere the most at Shore Medical Center."

Outside work, Dr. Wilson enjoys surfing and music: "I enjoy surfing with my friends and children... Our band has been fortunate to arrange music festivals with other bands."
